Our Staff



Our staff is highly skilled, uniquely trained and strives to provide energetic and fun-loving service to each patient. Our staff consists of team members with specialized training and multiple certifications, and each has years of experience in treating patients with the highest level of care. We strive to stay abreast of the very latest in technology and advancements by regularly attending continuing education courses and seminars.


Jessica Hermenau – Co-Owner/Practice Manager

My name is Jessica Hermenau, and my husband, Dr. Shawn Hermenau, and I started Desert Spine Institute in August 2010. Currently, I am the Practice Manager for Desert Spine. I graduated from the University of Utah in 2002 in Communications and Marketing. I have worked for both sides of healthcare – the physician and the hospital. I worked as a physician recruiter; then when Shawn was in the Army, I worked for a large health system in Georgia setting up their internal physician recruitment program.

I enjoy being the practice manager at Desert Spine because it has enabled me to utilize what I have learned on a micro level. It is challenging to look at healthcare from a solo provider perspective and make decisions based on what the community need is and how to utilize Dr. Hermenau’s skills according to those needs. This truly is a challenge in light of new regulations, requirements, demands on small businesses and the limited resources available. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional service and care with fiscal responsibility.

One of the greatest satisfactions I get from working is interacting with the patients, other physicians and their staff. I enjoy smiling and helping bring a smile to others around me. I have an amazing staff around me at Desert Spine and feel it truly is a treat and privilege to come to work each day.

On a personal level, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I stay busy with my girls, our dogs, traveling, and I completed my first half-marathon in January 2014.


Maria C. – Surgery Scheduler/Insurance Specialist

My name is Maria, and I am originally from California but have lived in Yuma for 26 years. I recently joined the Desert Spine family and work to ensure patients are scheduled for their care and assist with procuring insurance authorizations. My position allows me to greet all new and returning patients and to bring a smile to their face. I have worked in the healthcare field for several years and enjoy helping others.

Though my work keeps me busy, I enjoy my three wonderful boys and two grandchildren. My family is the focus of my personal life, and I look forward to being around them. We enjoy movies, floating down the river and cooking.


Jessica O. – Front Office Supervisor

My name is Jessica, and I was born in San Bernardino, California. I was raised here in Yuma. I have gained seven years of front office experience in the medical field. I joined Desert Spine family in October 2014. My position allows me to greet patients, gather information and schedule their appointments for them. I enjoy interacting with each patient and helping with their needs.

I am a mother of two boys. We love grilling, swimming and spending time together as a family. We have a dog and a turtle, Kobe and Mustache.


Bertha S. – Medical Assistant

My name is Bertha, and I am from San Luis, Arizona. I graduated from San Luis High School in 2013, and from the Health Education Career Institute in 2013 with a certificate in Medical Assisting. I really enjoy interacting with patients and being part of their care. My position at Desert Spine enables me to directly interact with each and every patient. I assist with obtaining vital patient information, documentation and delivering a smile to all our customers.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and two dogs, Tracy and Canela. I also enjoy going to the theater and watching TV with family and friends.


Maria P. – Billing Specialist

My Name is Maria Pena. I am from Yuma, Arizona. I have gained 12 years of experience in the medical field. I joined the Desert Spine Family in April 2015. I am a certified medical biller and member of the American Medical Billing Association since August of 2010. I love what I do and enjoy learning something new every day.

My position allows me to interact with insurance companies and with patients to ensure accurate billing and reimbursements. I am a mother of two wonderful girls and a wife. I enjoy cooking and spending time with my family and friends.


Shannon H. – Radiology Technologist

My name is Shannon, and I am a Yuma native. I was one of the original employees of Desert Spine Institute in August 2010. My work is challenging, but I really enjoy taking X-rays and assisting with patient care. After graduating from high school in Yuma, I moved to Tucson and obtained my degree in Applied Science and Radiologic Technology from Pima Community College. I have been working in the radiology field for over 20 years, and I love it!

I am a mother and wife and love to cook. We spend much of our family time on the patio with our four entertaining dogs. On free weekends, my family and I enjoy “Glamping” in the desert. We make numerous memories with our extended family and friends.
