Tattoo Removal Q & A

How does tattoo removal work?

All methods of tattoo removal aim to remove or fade the pigments used in your tattoo. The most popular methods of tattoo removal include laser surgery, surgical removal, and dermabrasion. These methods remove the ink underneath your first layers of skin.

Depending on your skin tone, the color of pigment used in your tattoo, and the size of your tattoo, Dr. Hermenau can determine if you’re a good candidate for laser tattoo removal. If you are, he outlines a treatment plan to fade or fully remove your tattoo over a series of treatments. In most cases, laser removal treatments are spaced out over a period of weeks or months in order to allow your skin to heal between sessions.

What are the benefits of laser tattoo removal?

Dr. Hermenau uses laser tattoo removal because it’s one of the safest and most effective methods for removing tattoos from all skin tones. Other benefits of laser tattoo removal include:

  • Minimal risk of infection
  • No need for surgery
  • No scarring
  • Faster healing time
  • Removal of specific portions or entire tattoos

Compared to surgical removal and dermabrasion, laser tattoo removal is less invasive and less harmful to your skin, so there is little risk of infection and no chance of scarring. After a laser tattoo removal session, you’ll need to protect your skin from UV radiation for the next few days with sunscreen or a bandage. You may also notice mild redness while your skin heals, though that goes away after two to three days.

What happens during a laser tattoo removal session?

During a laser tattoo removal session, Dr. Hermenau begins by cleaning your skin and applying a local anesthetic to numb your skin, if needed. He then turns on a Zimmer Cooler device which directs cold air at the treatment area to help you feel comfortable during your session.

Once you’re ready, Dr. Hermenau turns on the RevLite® SI laser from CynoSure® and uses the handheld wand to remove your tattoo. The RevLite SI laser uses Q-switched laser technology to heat and break down tattoo pigments without harming your skin. Your body then metabolizes and removes these pigments from your body as waste products.

The length of your session varies depending on the size of your tattoo. Dr. Hermenau provides after-care instructions to make sure your skin heals properly without discomfort.
