Acne Scar Treatment Q & A

What causes acne scars?

Acne occurs due to an excess buildup of sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells in your pores. To fix the damage from the redness and inflammation associated with acne, your body naturally produces collagen to repair your skin. Normally, collagen provides elasticity and support to skin, but in large quantities, it can build up and form scars.

There are three types of acne scars, including:

Atrophic scars

Atrophic scars form when acne causes tissue loss. This creates a pitted appearance to your skin that is difficult to cover with makeup or smooth out with at-home treatments.

Hypertrophic scars

Hypertrophic scars occur when your body produces too much collagen when repairing your skin. This creates a bumpy, rough surface and hyperpigmentation, or darkening of the skin.

Keloids

Keloids are similar to hypertrophic scars, but they’re larger and even darker in color. Keloids are most often seen on darker skin tones and can appear as large, raised scars that are red or purple in color.

Using a laser to treat acne scars, Dr. Hermenau can carefully resurface your skin and reduce areas of discoloration for a clearer, smoother appearance.

What are the benefits of laser removal for acne scars?

Laser removal is an effective solution for acne scarring without the risk of infection or lengthy recovery time. Other benefits of laser acne scar removal include:

  • Pinpointed treatments that don’t irritate healthy skin near the treatment area
  • No risk of allergic reactions or breakouts
  • Highly effective, long-term results
  • Tighter, fuller appearance to your skin after treatment

Since laser treatment for acne scarring is non-invasive, you can often return to your normal activities the same day. In some cases, you may experience mild redness or irritation at the treatment site for up to a day after your session. Dr. Hermenau also recommends protecting your skin with sunscreen after treatment to avoid damage from UV radiation.

How does laser removal for acne scars work?

Dr. Hermenau uses the RevLite® SI laser by CynoSure® to perform laser removal of acne scars. The laser system uses two different wavelengths of light to break down hyperpigmentation and excess collagen to resurface your skin and reduce scarring.

During your procedure, Dr. Hermenau uses the Zimmer Cooler to administer comfortable, cool air to your face to avoid discomfort from the laser. In some cases, Dr. Hermenau may also administer a topical anesthetic before beginning treatment.

Depending on the extent of your acne scarring, your visit may last 30-60 minutes. For best results, Dr. Hermenau may recommend two or three sessions.
